Specter Debate; My response to Hugh Hewitt

I tend to agree with your position vis a vis Arlen Specter as chair of the judiciary committee. The good folks over at NRO sometimes, and with the best of intentions, tend to get lost in nostalgia for the Goldwater days when we circled the wagons and took no prisoners in our fight to rebuild the conservative movement. However, the Gingrich revolution provides us with an object lesson in political arrogance: we tried to fly too high, too fast based on the '94 elections. We paid for our mistakes in the backlash that cost us many seats and, ultimately, the policymaking initiative. Make no mistake, we are fighting a war and not merely a series of battles. Nothing less than the future of our country is at stake. Framing the Specter debate in terms of Roe v. Wade only plays into the hands of liberals who are waiting to create another false campaign along the lines of the "Newt-Gingrich-is-evil-and-wants-to-starve-old-people-and-children" theme that worked so well for them in the '90's. The true goal with respect to the judicial battle is to appoint and confirm conservative jurists who will stem the tide of judicial activism that is eroding the foundations of our republic. We cannot let the liberals define this battle in terms that they can use to their advantage in the longer term and/or will weaken our team. If we define the battlefield in terms of judicial activism, we can not only win this battle, we will be in a stronger position to move forward, thereafter, in pursuit of our larger goals. As anyone with half a brain (and with any shred of intellectual honesty) can tell you, Roe v. Wade was improperly decided by an overreaching court. On the other hand, abortion cannot be made to disappear overnight simply through overturning that particularly vile piece of judicial activism. It will take a longer effort, on both the national and state levels, to ultimately succeed. The right-to-life movement is sophisticated enough to understand what it means to seat conservative judges, no matter what terms are used to define the debate. They just need to exercise a little restraint at the moment and fight this battle in line with a strategy to win the whole war. Specter has had several shots across his bow in the last few days which should serve to dampen some of his more liberal tendencies. You are absolutely right when you said we need to focus on building and maintaining a GOVERNING majority. Ultimately, Specter is just a gadfly unless we unintentionally make something more of him.

Kerry's Dishonorable Discharge?

Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to decieve! If this is true, then it explains all those missing links and other discrepancies with Kerry's military records. No wonder Jimmy Carter got top billing at the DNC in spite of the poisonous effect of his presence! The real question is how do we obtain the original documents? Kery won't release his military records and the press simply won't ask him questions about his military records (or about his lies about his service in Vietnam). If the blogosphere has any influence at all, it must be used to uncover the truth of this matter. I suspect the NY Sun story is true, but that suspicion is based upon circumstantial evidence of Kerry's lack of character and his cover-ups regarding his military record. I want indisputable proof to shove down the throats of the media and force this story to be reported before the election. Kerry must be pressured at every turn to release those records! Then, even if he doesn't, his deception by omission will be readily apparent. In the final weeks of his campaign, Kerry will not be able to hide as effectively as he did after the Swiftvets exposed his lies about Vietnam. He must be confronted!

While I might be able to accept a claim that Huckleberry Hound would hunt down and kill terrorists (albeit slowly and methodically), this dog just won't hunt! John Kerry cannot be trusted to put his personal ambitions and hubris aside long enough to cast a simple vote to provide our troops with the equipment they need as they go in harm's way. Vice President Cheney made a very telling point in his debate: John Kerry did not have the intestinal fortitude to stand up to Howard Dean, so why would anyone in their right mind think Kerry would even attempt to track down and kill those enemies of America who lurk in shadowy corners around the globe and plan ever more devious and diabolical methods of killing us.

As for John Kerry's secret-plan-to-win-the-war-on-terror-while-appeasing-everyone-and-simultaneously-saving-the-economy-by-raising-taxes, let's just say that, unless his secret plan involves a concession speech in November, it's doomed to failure. Besides, what Kerry said to the press about his plan only leaves two options, either: 1) Americans are supposed to take the unverified word of the most liberal, anti-defense member of the Senate that he's really a hawk when it comes to defense of our country; or 2) Americans are too stupid to realize that Kerry has already enunciated a comprehensive plan to win the war on terror and the entire mainstream media forgot to mention any of the details of this mythical plan. Either way, Kerry really must believe that the American people are, individually and collectively, dumber than the cops who believed Teddy Kennedy's story about Chappaquidic.

Kerry--U.S. can't be trusted with nukes, but North Korea and Iran can.
--U.S. must pass "global test" before taking any military action.
--Saddam Hussein was not a threat and the war in Iraq is a diversion

President Bush-- We are doing the right thing, taking the right actions in the GWOT.
-- Bilateral talks with North Korea resulted in North Korean nukes.
-- It's tough, but we must be tougher than the enemy and stay the course.

Debate nonsense

Yawn. It seems everyone, everywhere is simply ecstatic over the possibilities surrounding tonight's debate. Puh-leez! Kerry's useful idiots wax orgasmic over the following leftist conventional wisdom: 1) our guy is smarter (as opposed to that dumb redneck hick from Harvard Business School); 2) our guy is a great debater (as SO aptly demonstrated during interminable months of primary love-fests with the other dwarves); 3) our guy's only problem has been his lack of opportunity to really connect and communicate with the people and this debate will finally give him the platform he's been lacking (yeah, that's the ticket-- being on national television every night for a year really deprived Kerry of a chance to comminicate his message); and 4) to paraphrase Kathy Bates' character from "The Waterboy" --BOOOSHH is de DEBIL!!!! (sure, and George Soros is definitely the right guy to run the Treasury Department). The other, unspoken-but-constantly-thought, idea percolating through the DNC fever-swamps is the understanding that Kerry has to hit one out of the park during the debate to even have a chance at winning the election.

Ain't gonna happen folks. No matter what Kerry says or does tonight (and we've heard him espouse every side of every issue over the last year) it will not change the dynamics of this election. All that President Bush has to do to succeed is reiterate his positions on the GWOT and the economy and refuse to be sidetracked by any Kerry theatrics (and there WILL be Kerry theatrics--it's another sign of his desperation). If there's even the slightest narrowing of Bush's lead in any poll, the talking heads will be screaming about a Kerry win. However, at the end of the day, not very many people will be pursuaded to change their votes because of the debate(s). The only real influence of presidential debates occurs when they solidify voters' opinions of the candidate for whom they were already going to vote. Don't expect anything different this time around.

After Action Report Confirms Swiftvets

The newly revealed after action report confirms that the swiftvets were telling the truth and that John Kerry lied about the incident for which Kerry received a Silver Star. I don't have any information on the provenance of the report, so the possibility of another hoax (this one started to take the heat off the lefties for Rathergate) is still out there. Check out the report here. I'm no document expert, but it looks like damn near every report or record of a similar nature that I ever encountered during my service. As for the substance, it corroborates the swiftvets' version of events and shows that Kerry lied (again) when he stated that the fleeing VC was not wounded before Kerry shot him. It's a disturbing pattern for Kerry: constant, needless embellishment and inflation of his actions. You see, the report actually shows that Kerry acted as expected of a Naval Officer. His actions that day were commendable and he behaved well under fire. However, and it's a big however, Kerry's actions did not merit a Silver Star. Period. No how, no way. Some commendation? Probably. A Bronze Star perhaps? Maybe, but I doubt it. Judging from the report, a unit citation would have been the most appropriate award. For you non-military types out there, a unit citation is issued to an entire unit for meritorious action as a unit. Each member of the unit receives the award. John Kerry's actions simply did not rise above what the rest of the unit was doing that day. Bottom line: an award of a Silver Star for the actions ascribed to John Kerry by this report is highly suspect. Which begs the question: why was a Silver Star awarded to Kerry? I believe the swiftvets have answered that too: Kerry's self-recommendation and relentless campaigning for the award.

I was incredibly impressed by Governor Schwartzenegger last night. His optimism and faith in America and the American people evoked fond memories of Ronald Reagan's similar message of hope. Here is an excerpt that catches the spirit of the whole speech:

"My fellow immigrants, my fellow Americans, how do you know if you are a Republican? Well, I tell you how. If you believe that government should be accountable to the people, not the people to the government, then you are a Republican!

Bill Buckley awoke us to the need to actively defend our values and beliefs and simultaneously led the intellectual development of modern American conservatism. Now we were finally fighting back!

Barry Goldwater brought our cause to the forefront of American political discourse. By steadfastly refusing to abandon his principles, he inspired a new generation's refusal to compromise their ideals.

Ronald Reagan provided the inspired leadership required to achieve victory and completely redefined the battlefield of American politics in the process. Post-Reagan, no politician dares to openly campaign for tax increases.

The fight continues and we cannot rest because the forces of tyranny and oppression continue to loom large in our country. Make no mistake, I'm talking about the liberal movement and its assorted allies and useful idiots who continue to oppose freedom and continue to support government control over every aspect of our lives. They have many different agendas and ideologies, but their one overriding, common factor is the fascist doctrine that the state must be all-powerful. The idea that the state is the pinnacle of human achievement may be laughable, but it is dangerously seductive to the weak-minded and, thus, dangerous to our liberty.

Keep fighting the good fight! Keep the faith and remember that your cause is the cause of liberty!

Is it just me, or is everyone incredibly bored with the mainstream media's coverage of Kerry's Vietnam/Cambodia lies? Even after they finally acknowledged the story, the mainstream media completely failed to address the magnitude and multiplicity of the charges against Kerry. Meanwhile, bloggers like Hugh Hewitt and Ed Morrisey have provided in-depth coverage, complete with meticulously researched evidence that supports and/or CONCLUSIVELY PROVES the swiftvets charges against Kerry. Sure, everyone is all too aware of the mainstream media's leftist ideology and open support for Kerry, but you would think that personal pride would induce some of them to fully examine the story. Talk about potential for a Pulitzer! This is especially curious in light of the fact that Kerry's ship is taking on water faster than the Titanic and not even the most rabid marxist posing as a journalist will want to go down with the good ship Kerrypop. Can the mainstream media be that blind? Any thoughts? Anyone?

Purple Heart, Purple Haze

Kerry admits first Purple Heart may have been awarded for self-inflicted wound (Hat tip Captain's Quarters). As Alice said in Wonderland, curiouser and curiouser. The downward spiral of the Kerry campaign is accelerating. Chris Lynch has put together a remarkable (and well researched) timeline of the meltdown since the beginning of August. The Washington Post is actually discussing the substance of the Christmas-in-Cambodia lie. What will happen next? Will the NY Times actually report on the story? OK, Maybe that would be asking too much.

As I see it, Kerry's biggest mistake (aside from basing his campaign on a web of lies) was to panic and address the swifties' claims before the media were able to cover for him. If Kerry had kept his mouth shut, the mainstream media would have continued to pretend that there was no story while simultaneously portraying the swift boat vets as a lunatic fringe/Republican smear campaign. Although the blogosphere did a remarkable job in making the public aware of the truth of the swifties' claims, the (waning) influence of the mainstream media is still a force to be reckoned with. The efforts to discredit the swifties would have been enough to leave some doubt in the minds of voters and save Kerry from the disaster he now faces. Kerry, though, unleashed his pet clintonistas to make personal attacks on the swifties. The net result of that tactic was to enhance the credibility of the swifties because the substantive assertions against Kerry remained unanswered. Bad form old boy. Clinton would have handled it much more smoothly. However, John Kerry is no Bill Clinton. He's not even a "Clinton Democrat." John Kerry is a Dukakis protoge (he was Dukakis' Lieutenant Governor), and he cannot forget the conventional wisdom among democrat operatives that Dukakis lost because he failed to counterattack in '88. Kerry is emotionally incapable of riding out a controversy due to that fear of making the same perceived mistakes as his old boss and also due to a more personal fear of ever being seen as weak, fearful, or unmanly. In the end, no matter how Kerry tries to overcompensate for his fears, the simple fact remains that he never understood that the truth matters or that the mainstream media no longer control what is reported in the information age. I bet John Kerry wishes Al Gore had never invented the internet.

How do you deal effectively with the liberal media? In all honesty, it's something that bloggers have been doing for some time, but it's often on a hit-or-miss basis. The methodology is quite simple really--discuss the issues and support your positions with facts and logic. I know it sounds too easy, but it really works and it drives the liberal media NUTS! The reasons for this are twofold: the liberal media are conditioned to being the only voice heard, thus they are used to deciding not only what is said about an issue, but also deciding what constitutes the issues in the first place. The net result has been some short term victories for them through restricting and distorting the flow of information, but at the cost of not learning how to defend the opinions they present as news. That is why the recent exposure of Kerry's lies about Cambodia has caught them so unprepared. They always underestimated the internet (or pridefully dismissed it because they could not control it). The massive nature of the exposure of Kerry's lies created a situation that they first tried to ignore, and, when it was simply too big to ignore, they addressed it with silly personal attacks against the swift boat vets that only highlight the fact that they are ducking the real issues: Kerry's fabrications and his lack of qualifications to be commander-in-chief. They still don't realize that the story won't go away now that they've attempted a whitewash. They no longer control the flow of information, and logical, fact-based analysis trumps their desperate attempts to deflect attention away from the substance of the story. As I said before, it drives the liberal media NUTS! The fact that this story resonates so strongly with the public is giving the liberals ulcers. They are not equipped to cope with a public that has access to the facts behind the stories and a public that no longer accepts their ex cathedra pronouncements. Keep hitting the liberal media with the truth and watch their influence shrivel.

John Kerry has surprised me. I naively thought the American public would never be subjected to a politico with a more malleable memory than Billary's infamous recollections of convenience about their collective misdeeds. However, the mounting furor over Kerry's lies and exaggerations about Vietnam is exposing a new low in the depths to which liberals will sink in order to obtain power. It was bad enough when Kerry betrayed our nation and his erstwhile comrades in arms with his lying anti-war testimony upon his return from Vietnam. That kind of treason alone deserves swift justice-the kind involving a frontier judge, a rope, and a tree. Kerry had to go even further beyond the pale and compound his treason with shameless self-aggrandizements later in life when it was expedient for him to be viewed as a patriotic American. Thus, we were subjected to his stories about his "heroic" service, the memories of being in Cambodia illegally that were "seared, seared" into his mind, and the constant reminders of his three purple hearts. Now that the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth have exposed Kerry's extraordinary lies, the lefties can only splutter with impotent rage at the temerity of anyone questioning their annointed messiah. Even without the sworn statements of the swifties, Kerry's lies about Cambodia and Christmas 1968 have been exposed as the complete fabrications of a disturbed mind. Yes, I said disturbed and I meant it. There are only two possible explanations for Kerry's lies: 1) He made it up solely in furtherance of a megalomaniacal pursuit of personal power; or 2) He really believes it (i.e. he's watched Apocalypse Now so many times that he believes it was a documentary about him). Either way, it's bad news for America if he's elected President. Since being caught in the lies about Cambodia, Kerry's official spin boils down to basically admitting that he lied, claiming that there must be a grain of truth there somewhere, and saying they'll get back to us when they figure out the best way to spin this. Maybe Kerry thinks it will all go away if he dons his magic hat that the ficticious CIA agent gave him (by "gave" Kerry must mean that an aide bought it in a surplus store). Since Kerry's so far gone into the realm of fantasy anyway, he might as well break out the seven-league-boots and start trying to outrun the avalanche of truth that's about to destroy his political career.

As a lifelong hunter, all I could do was laugh and wonder what his PETA friends think. In an all too typical act of pandering, John Kerry actually claimed to be a dedicated deer hunter, then proceeded to prove that his statement was a lie by describing his technique:
      "He was in Wisconsin the other day, pretending to be a regular guy, and was asked what
       kind of hunting he preferred. "I'd have to say deer," said the senator. "I go out with my
       trusty 12-gauge double-barrel, crawl around on my stomach... That's hunting"
Note to Kerry: the only thing you hunt like that are truffles! Thanks to Mark Steyn and the Telegraph for reporting this hilarious tidbit.

Decent, ethical behavior isn't as complicated as a certain unamed political party (and its stable of operatives, pundits, journalists, and other hacks) would have us believe. Do not lie, cheat, or steal, nor tolerate those who do. There, I've said it. What's so complicated about that? Sandy Berger lied to the 9/11 commission (and to John Kerry), he cheated by ignoring or otherwise circumventing all of the major rules for dealing with classified documents and information, and he stole classified documents with a direct bearing on the continued security of this country. Why? Apparently to cover up for his own malfeasance/negligence in dealing with terrorist threats and also to cover up Clinton's similar malfeasance/negligence. Unfortunately, the only misdeed for which Berger is likely to be punished at all is his lie of omission to Kerry (he conveniently forgot to tell Kerry he was under investigation when Kerry tapped him as an advisor), and that "punishment' consisted of mere dismissal by the Kerry camp. Of course, we'll now have to endure the usual DNC propaganda attack: 1) lie big, lie loudly, and lie long enough (at least until enough people believe you); and 2) turn the tables by making outrageous, baseless attacks against the people who caught you red-handed (remember the vast, right-wing conspiracy?). No doubt that great bastion of ethical journalism, the New York Times, will continue to run a nauseating series of editorials decrying the "timing" of the story when they even get around to acknowledging the very existence of a real story. They may even find a way to insinuate that Karl Rove shoved the missing documents in Berger's pants and socks. The only encouraging aspect will be that no one outside their party faithful takes them seriously anymore.

Well, the DNC is off and running in Boston. The BIG QUESTION driving their current angst is how much of their true feelings about President Bush they should display during this week's socialist love-fest in Beantown. While they obviously want to avoid a repeat of the Wellstone memorial fiasco, the real fun lies in watching them display their utter contempt for ordinary Americans by assuming that we will not notice their debate nor understand that the mere fact that they are having such a debate is a blatant admission that what they really want to do this week is alternate their time between singing "kumbaya" with algore and burning American flags with Jabba-the-filmmaker. Gee, a realistic, pro-American policy and party platform would be nice for a change, but we should be grateful-this kind of nonsense will keep the Dems marginalized for years to come and allow responsible adults to govern this great nation for at least FOUR MORE YEARS.
